The Suburban Review (TSR) is a socially conscious literary journal fighting against Australia’s rapidly declining independent publishing landscape. Our mission is to create and contribute to a robust local publishing community by publishing writers and artists, both emerging and established, and by practising sustainable, growth-oriented publishing and skills development.
Literary journals are so important as a first (and second, and third) publishing avenue for writers and artists. You don’t just walk into a publishing house and get a book deal, or have a gallery call you out of the blue for an exhibition. Journals have a long (400+ year) history of being a platform for work which is new, innovative, experimental, or just outrageously good. Writers like Toni Morrison, Ocean Vuong, and even Sylvia Plath and Ernest Hemingway got their start in journals a lot like TSR. We’re vital.
But the fact is, literary journals are extremely poorly supported in Australia’s arts funding climate (like, more poorly supported than most things, if you can imagine). In the first 2024 Creative Australia round for organisations, one literary journal was funded—there are over thirty established literary journals in Australia. In the first 2024 round of Create NSW Annual Funding for Organisations, no literary journals were funded. One journal was funded in the previous round, for one issue of that journal.
So, here we are, extending a paw, to ask for your financial support—as well as your help to get the word out to new audiences.
