This July, the team at The Suburban Review are offering a behind the scenes look at the lifecycle of a magazine. Learn the ropes of editing, management, and production over three weeks, and collaborate on editing and printing a magazine of your very own!

You’ll learn:

  • How to commission and edit written creative work
  • The foundations of running a journal
  • Layout lessons for bringing your journal to life with open-source software
  • How to build and effectively manage a good creative team
  • Where and how to apply for funding
  • Budgeting 101
  • How to promote sustainable working conditions in an arts organisation
  • What to do when things go wrong (a skill that’s important in every creative industry!)

This workshop involves participation in virtual classrooms twice weekly, as well as learning material to get through at your own pace. You will need to source one piece of creative written material (and optional visual media) to publish in the magazine.

All participants will receive a set of limited print run copies of their magazine, as well as a digital master copy for future print runs.

Virtual class schedule:

  • Monday 12 July 5:30-7pm AEST
  • Thursday 15 July 5:30-7pm AEST
  • Monday 19 July 5:30-7pm AEST
  • Thursday 22 July 5:30-7pm AEST
