The Void, July 2020

A gender-nonspecific figure sits beside a hole in the ground. They have dark complexion and white hair, tattoos of bats flapping on their right arm, a teal crop top, black pants. They hold a thin, tall, branch like a staff. Atop it is secured a repurposed radio antenna, evoking an ornament, and a small bird has perched itself on this. Around the hole by the figure’s feet are scattered a notebook, some envelopes, a pen, and a smart phone. On the screen is a single word balloon with the question mark symbol inside. A laptop sits at the opposite end of the hole, a “new-mail” alert dinging in the bottom corner. Next to it stands a mallard duck, casually looking across at the figure. From the hole three twisting, wispy word balloons rise from the darkness like smoke.

Panel 1: A queue of silhouetted people line up before a shining, silver, phallic rocket emblazoned with ‘TECH BROS.’ To the right stand two silhouetted personnel, one shouts ‘…scientists and professional adults only!!” Panel 2: The text box reads, ‘2020 has been filled with uncertainty and it’s difficult to know what to do next…' The narrator sits by a cliff edge overlooking mountains. Panel 3: The narrator stands at the edge, hands to mouth and shouts, ‘WHAT SHOULD I DO!?’ Panel 4: The narrator scrunches up her face, her hair billowing behind her. Wind lines blow across the panel with a final message in polite cursive: ‘you do you’.

How to Yell Across the Earth

Page 2. At the bottom of the page are two broad black brushstrokes. They are moving across the page in a scribble. They are translucent and sit on top of each other. The strips are black and the text is white. In the centre of this page is a large white circle. Inside the circle is imagery of a coast with large rocky outcrops. There are a few thin lines of rainbow gradient on the coast image, creating a subtle ripple effect. The circle’s edges are replicated, creating that same ghostly effect. There are three strips of text that are staggered to the right. The first strip says, ‘Repeat it back (message received)’. The second strip says, ‘Is this dialogue or recursion?’ The third strip says, ‘Even passive satellites can be weaponised’ There is a final strip right at the bottom of the circle. It says, ‘Surveilling topographic ripples’. The text fades in and out of the black strip and looks like a wave. At the bottom right of the page are two strips overlapping each other. The strips are white and the text is black. The text on both strips is the same. It says, ‘Sounds and signals mesh cacophonous’.

Panel 2: ‘He says renting a warehouse costs less than a retail store.’ A closer look at the manager, slight black mohawk and facial hair. He types on the laptop. Panel 3: ‘Unfortunately, there’s no heating or plumbing.’ A close up of the narrator picking up the box. We see the figures’ cute face. Text on the top left of the box reads, ‘figure’. Panel 4: ‘The nearest bathroom is at a KFC a few blocks away.’ The narrator and the manager wave goodbye to one another. Panel 5: ‘That’s dedication.’ Their car drives away, a couple puffs of smoke trailing behind.
