Shani Nottingham’s art practice is woven together with many strands, from collages to mixed media, photography, drawing, illustration, and installation. She seeks out small elements of beauty and interest in everyday life, finding moments and objects that can bind, comfort, and hold us, or confront and surprise. Since 2018, she has been working on The Breadtag Project—bread tags are saved and sent to her from all over the world as an abundant waste material. She reclaims and transforms them, moving past their initial purpose/life span to become something that has value and meaning, provoking awareness and space for dialogue about single-use plastics.
